SailMaine Open House

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

SailMaine is hosting an open house on June 7th for members of the public.  They have been looking for volunteers to help with a variety of on and off the water tasks and many of you have probably already been solicited to assist.  This is a good way to help attract people into our sport who might someday become Fleet 43 crew or competitors.

SailMaine has, for the past several years, willingly lent Fleet 43 their large drop marks for use in the Downeast. Beyond their generosity to us, the organization is doing a lot in the community to promote and develop the sport of sailing and we should all be thankful for that. I encourage anyone in Fleet 43 who has free time that day to consider helping out. I will see you there.

First Wednesday Night Race

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Six boats for the first Wednesday Night race, including a new boat to the fleet — Wabi Sabi (formerly known as Belafonte).  Thanks to Nick Dambrie and crew for running three quick races and not chickening out when a thunderstorm rolled by to the west.

Results for the evening: 1.) Flying Circus 1-4-1, 2.) Al 2-3-2, 3.) Mr Hankey 3-1-5, 4.) Second Chance 4-2-6, 5.) Pit Party 5-6-3, 6.) Wabi Sabi 6-5-4.  Note the improvement in every race for the new boat.  Maybe we better watch out for them.

District 1 Championship / Worlds Qualifier

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

The 2008 District 1 Championship in Mallet’s Bay, VT is a Worlds Qualifier event for the 2009 Worlds in Annapolis.  This regatta had been scheduled for mid-August, but has been moved to September 20-21, the weekend before Changing of the Colors.

This regatta is a convenient stop for those traveling to Lake George the following week and Fleet 23 has let me know that there will be ample storage space during the week between events.  There still appear to be a few slots open for away boats at Lake George for others who may wish to combine these two events.

I will link to the NOR and registration site when they become available.

Boats in the Water

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Successful launch day yesterday, with the following boats splashed: Flying Circus, Denali, Impetuous, Bad Apple, Second Chance, Pit Party, Flying Chicken, Insecurity, Barking Spidah and Wabi Sabi (the old Belafonte).  Not sure, but I think that Bouncing Betty may have launched later in the day.  Al launched last weekend.

Mr. Hankey is sailing this weekend at te U.S. Nationals in Staten Island, NY.  Looks like they had a tough day on Saturday; they stood 39th of 54 boats at the end of the day.

No word from Kinda Blue (Matt . . .?) or Jazzazi (Jim . . . ?).

We’re also still waiting for the launc of Draco and a new boat owned by Scott Fox that will be helmed by his daughter Sarah.

Hey, if we get all these boats out on the line at once we’ll have 17!

Fleet 43 Donates “Regatta Pro Start” to PYC

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Continuing its tradition of giving back to its host, Fleet 43 has donated Regatta Pro Start to the Portland Yacht Club. Regatta Pro Start is an automatic starting horn that relieves the race committee of the demanding task of keeping time for shooting guns and allows them to pay closer attention to the start line.  The system was used by the race committees in the most recent Louis Vuitton and America’s Cup races and by the Storm Trysail Club at last year’s Block Island Race Week.

Not only will Regatta Pro Start make things easier for race committees, it will also save PYC roughly $1,000 annually on shotgun shells.  No shotguns also means improved on-ther-water safety. We expect it to be installed on the Lindsay Lord in time for the first Wednesday night race.

As a result of the savings that PYC will realize in 2008, the PYC Board has redirected $500 budget dollars in Fleet 43’s name to the construction of the Bud Singer Dock House.  The Dock House is under construction now and should be complete shortly.  Fleet members interested in donating toward the construction of the Bud Singer Dock House should contact Tony Jessen or Chip Harris.

Fleet Meeting Results

Friday, May 9th, 2008

At the Fleet meeting last night we conducted the following business:

Approved the calendar for the year, which is now posted at http://www.j24fleet43.org/pages/calendar.php.  Launch on the 17th and first Wednesday night race on the 21st!

Approved Fleet dues and Wednesday Night registration fees, all of which were reduced from last year.  Wednesday night registration will be $200, Fleet dues are $50 and the “alternate helmsman” fee is $25.

Appointed Molly White as the Downeast Regatta Co-Chair.
